Ian Shirley

I am Senior Lecturer in Primary Music Education at Edge Hill University, and programme leader for the Primary PGCE programme. I am an experienced primary teacher and have contributed to many publications about primary music education. From 2007 to 2011 I was editor of Primary Music Today.

I am particularly interested in creative approaches to music education which encourage children to make musical decisions. I have been a member of the Orff Society board since 2011, and have a special interest in creative music making and singing. I have been a member of the national choral organisation, Sing for Pleasure, for many years. In 2017 I completed a doctorate at Sheffield University focusing on UK music education policy.
