Inclusive Music Education: Shirley Salmon Leads “Music for All” Workshop for Orff UK
Posted on: 16/03/2026Orff UK recently welcomed internationally respected Orff practitioner Shirley Salmon to lead a professional development workshop exploring inclusive music-making in the classroom. The course, Music for All! Creating an Inclusive Classroom, brought together teachers and educators for a practical day of singing, movement, improvisation and ensemble work rooted in the Orff approach.

Participants explored the powerful concept of “upgrading the minor role,” developed by Wilhelm Keller, which celebrates the importance of every contribution within a musical ensemble. Through activities including body percussion, soundscape creation, listening exercises and collaborative movement work, teachers experienced how inclusive musical structures allow every participant to engage creatively.

The workshop also introduced the ideas of pre-rhythmic and pre-melodic sound, expanding possibilities for participation in classrooms where traditional rhythmic or melodic tasks may present barriers.
Teachers left the course with renewed inspiration, practical strategies and fresh repertoire to support inclusive music-making in their own settings.
Orff UK extends sincere thanks to Shirley Salmon for sharing her expertise and inspiring educators to create musical environments in which every child can belong.
