Shirley studied music at the University of York in the UK and trained as a primary school teacher in London. She continued her studies in Austria and has taught children and adults with different abilities and in diverse contexts for over 40 years. She was a lecturer at the Orff-Institute, University Mozarteum Salzburg from 1984 to 2019. She teaches and lectures nationally and internationally, has published books, a DVD and numerous articles.
